International Training Institute for Materials Science (ITIMS) was established in December 1992 by Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam and became directly under Hanoi University of Technology since December 2004. ITIMS has functions of post-graduate education, doing research and technology transfer in the field of materials science (electronic materials). In its development, ITIMS has been maintaining the international level in both training (master and doctor degrees) and doing research. Master students and doctors graduated at ITIMS have been accepted for further study in well-known universities and institutes in the world. The number of articles (5-10/year) published by staff members of ITIMS in scientific journals with impact factor increases annually. In addition, ITIMS also implements various research projects from different funds including national program for materials science and technology development.

For training purpose, ITIMS offers two majors: Materials science and engineering and Nano science and technology with updated contents to meet the international standard. The students follow the courses which were co-edited by teachers of ITIMS and of Faculty of Science (University of Amsterdam) in order to get the diploma issued by either one of these training organizations. After graduation, they can be able to perform research in institutes, teach at universities, work in industry or further study at PhD level in training institutions of Vietnam or abroad.

With respect to research and technology transfer, ITIMS focuses on building qualified staff and improving infrastructure as well as equipment for specific laboratories in which micro-nano technologies are of particular importance. Fundamental research in advanced level aims at publishing scientific works in high-ranking journals. The topics of research include magnetic, semiconducting and superconducting materials at micro and nano scales, materials for energy conversion and energy storage. Applied research focuses on manufacturing device prototypes, transferring technology to industries, companies and other activities for human-life purposes.
